Zakynthos has been written about since long before Greece was a single country, and it wears that age well, white cliffs above water so blue it seems invented, olive groves that have never once been in a hurry. Shipwreck Beach (Navagio)
The one everyone photographs, for good reason, a rusted hull on white sand, cliffs closing in on turquoise water like the island built its own postcard. Reachable only by boat, which does most of the work of keeping it worth the trip, arrive early enough and the cove is nearly yours.
Blue Caves
Sea caves along the northern coast, where the light does something to the water that's genuinely hard to describe until you're inside one of them, a blue that seems to come from underneath rather than above. Better before ten, while it's still quiet enough to hear your own oars.
Marathonissi (Turtle Island)
Uninhabited, save for the loggerhead turtles that have been nesting on its beaches for longer than anyone's kept records. It asks visitors to be quiet, and largely gets its way, an island that's remained exactly as it was because almost nobody stays long enough to change it.
National Marine Park
A protected stretch of sea and coastline set aside for the turtles and whatever else still calls these waters home, one of the few corners of the Ionian left entirely to itself.

The Zakynthos Turtle Rescue Centre gives younger guests a proper, close look at the island's namesake creatures. Alykes Park offers open green space and playgrounds for an unhurried afternoon, and the Mikro Nisi Nature Trail is an easy, level walk that suits nearly any age.
Easy beaches for children
Laganas Beach keeps calm water and a lifeguard on duty. Alykes Beach slopes gently with soft sand underfoot. Tsilivi Beach rounds things out with family-friendly amenities and water gentle enough for the smallest guests to wade in without a second thought.

Traditional tavernas & cuisine
To Spitiko in Zakynthos Town serves the island's cooking the way it's actually meant to taste, local and unfussy, with the seafood that came in that morning. Taverna Dionysos in Alykes keeps a relaxed, classic table. Limni Keriou pairs a proper dinner with a view of the sea that does most of the work itself.
Local villages & museums
Volimes has kept its traditional crafts alive rather than performing them for visitors passing through. The Anafonitria Monastery sits quiet and centuries-settled among the trees. The Byzantine Museum in Zakynthos Town holds an afternoon with the island's longer history, for anyone who'd like the island to mean a little more by the time they leave it.
Nightlife highlights
Bohème Bar in Zakynthos Town keeps a calm, well-poured evening for anyone who'd like one. Porto Limnionas' beach bars offer a drink with the sunset built in. The Laganas Strip is there too, livelier by a fair margin, worth knowing about even if it isn't what a stay at Rivazzurra is generally built around.
