There’s a particular quiet that settles over Rivazzurra somewhere around six in the evening, when the cicadas lose interest and the sea takes over as the only sound worth listening to. Four ensuite bedrooms sit across five thousand square metres of walled, planted grounds on the southern coast of Zakynthos, each room its own small territory, each with a door that closes properly. Four bedrooms, four entirely different mornings. One guest is up with the light for a swim before the pool’s been touched by anyone else; another hasn’t surfaced before eleven in the better part of a decade, and has no plans to start now. Rivazzurra’s ensuite rooms, each with its own balcony and its own door that actually closes, were built around a fact most villas seem to forget: a family sharing a house is not the same as a family sharing a room, and the two should never be confused for each other.
The three upper bedrooms watch the pool from slightly different angles, which turns out to matter more than you’d expect. Ask anyone who’s stayed here twice and they’ll tell you they have a favourite hour to be up on that particular balcony, and a reason for it they probably haven’t examined too closely. Coco-Mat mattresses throughout, individual climate control in every room, so no one’s ever negotiating over the thermostat at midnight. The kind of detail you only notice once, and then never stop noticing its absence everywhere else.
